If you ask me what my favorite pizza place is, you are going to get a really long answer. The reason is because I have many different favorites based on pizza types. I would rank Mellow Mushroom as #1 in the specialty pizza category. They have a bunch of different, off the wall varieties and that’s what I love about them.
On this visit, we got the Buffalo Chicken Pizza and the Bayou Bleu.
The Buffalo Chicken Pizza has been a favorite of mine for a while. On this pizza, the tomato sauce is replaced by buffalo sauce and you are given your choice of ranch or blue cheese for dipping. I don’t know about you, but any time I get to dip something in ranch, I am a very happy girl! The pizza also comes topped with bacon and caramelized onions, so there are some awesome flavor combinations going on there.
We first discovered the Bayou Bleu Pizza when they were running a New Orleans promotion a little while back. I guess everyone loved it because it’s now on their menu! Ivan was thrilled when he found out because it is his favorite. The Bayou Bleu comes with grilled shrimp, andouille sausage, and a spicy bleu cheese base. The flavors come together perfectly and they are very generous with the toppings.
One thing I don’t usually like about pizza is the crust. To me, that’s a waste of stomach space. Now let me tell you that I LOVE Mellow Mushroom’s crust! It is so light and fluffy and buttery…yummm. I think the secret is sourdough, but I’m not positive.
Verdict: Loved it! While Mellow Mushroom’s prices are a little higher than a traditional pizza joint, it makes sense. They use better ingredients and have different, inventive menu items. When you are looking for a pizza place that thinks outside the box (no pun intended, I swear!!), check out Mellow Mushroom!
